Strokes Gained vs Expected Strokes: What's the Difference?
Expected strokes describes where your ball is. Strokes gained describes what you did with it. Confusing the two leads to bad conclusions about your own game, and bad decisions on the course.

Read enough golf analytics and you will see “expected strokes” and “strokes gained” used as if they were the same idea. They aren’t. Expected strokes is a property of a position on the golf course — a number attached to a lie and a distance, before anyone swings. Strokes gained is a property of a shot, calculated by comparing two of those position values.
One is the raw material. The other is what you build with it. Getting them mixed up is why golfers say things like “my expected strokes was bad on that hole,” which is roughly like saying the ruler was short.
Expected Strokes Is a Position Value
Expected strokes answers one question: from this exact spot, how many shots does it take to hole out on average?
That’s it. No judgment, no performance. Just a number describing a location, drawn from a lookup table built on millions of recorded shots. Mark Broadie’s work in Every Shot Counts established the modern version of these tables using PGA Tour ShotLink data.

Read a few rows and the structure becomes obvious. Rough at 150 yards costs about a quarter of a stroke more than fairway at the same yardage. A tour player two-putts from 18 feet more often than not, so that row sits just below 2.0. Nothing here says anyone played well or badly. These are prices, not scores.
Two properties of expected strokes matter for everything that follows:
- It always describes a state, never an action. A ball in the fairway at 150 has an expected strokes value whether it got there off a perfect drive or a shanked recovery.
- It depends entirely on which baseline you pick. The table above is PGA Tour. A 15-handicap baseline puts the same fairway-150 position around 3.4 strokes. Same ball, same lie, different number.
Strokes Gained Measures the Shot Between Two Positions
Strokes gained takes two expected-strokes values and one swing, and produces a verdict:
Strokes gained = expected strokes (start) − expected strokes (finish) − 1
The −1 is the shot you just spent. If moving from the start position to the finish position saved you more than the one stroke it cost, you gained. If it saved less, you lost.
Take a drive on that 410-yard par 4. Start: tee, 4.005. Finish: fairway, 150 yards, 2.945.
4.005 − 2.945 − 1 = +0.06
A shade better than the tour baseline. Hit the same distance into the rough instead — 3.19 — and it becomes 4.005 − 3.19 − 1 = −0.185. The drive traveled exactly as far. The lie cost about a quarter of a stroke.
So strokes gained needs both a before and an after. Expected strokes only needs a where. That is the whole distinction, and everything else follows from it.

The last row is the practical one. Expected strokes is a forward-looking tool you use standing over the ball. Strokes gained is a backward-looking tool you use in the parking lot.
A Full Hole With Both Numbers

Notice what happened. The expected-strokes column never judges anything. It just tracks where the ball sat. The strokes gained column turns each pair of those values into a performance number. And the four strokes gained values sum to the starting expected strokes minus the strokes actually taken: 4.005 − 4 = +0.005.
That identity holds on every hole you will ever play. Strokes gained for a hole is just the expected strokes you started with, minus what you actually spent. Which is another way of saying strokes gained is not a separate measurement system bolted onto golf. It is arithmetic on the expected-strokes table. Three Ways Golfers Mix Them Up
”My expected strokes was terrible on that hole”
Expected strokes has no good or bad. If you drive it into a fairway bunker 60 yards short of the green, your expected strokes goes up — you need more shots from there. That’s a description of your predicament, not a grade. The grade is the strokes gained value on the drive that put you there.
Treating expected strokes as a prediction of your own score
The tour table says a 410-yard par 4 is worth 4.005 strokes. If you play off 18, you are not going to average 4.0 on that hole, and nothing has gone wrong when you don’t. That number is the average for the population the baseline was built from.
This is where benchmark choice stops being cosmetic. Pick a baseline near your own level and expected strokes becomes a realistic reference for your decisions. Comparing strokes gained numbers computed against different baselines
Since strokes gained is built from expected strokes, changing the baseline changes every strokes gained value in the round. Your +1.2 approach against a 15-handicap baseline and a friend’s −0.4 against tour are not on the same scale. Compare like with like or don’t compare.
Where Expected Strokes Beats Strokes Gained
Strokes gained cannot help you before a shot, because the finishing position hasn’t happened yet. Expected strokes can, and this is where it earns its keep.
You’re 250 yards out in the fairway on a par 5, water short right of the green. Go for it, or lay up to a full wedge?
Lay up first, because it’s simple. A comfortable lay-up leaves 100 yards in the fairway: 2.815 expected strokes. Add the lay-up shot itself and the whole path costs 1 + 2.815 = 3.815 strokes from where you stand.
Going for it is a weighted average over your realistic outcomes. Say your dispersion with a 3-wood from 250 gives you roughly:

Weighted: (0.35 × 1.98) + (0.35 × 2.70) + (0.20 × 2.66) + (0.10 × 3.815) = 2.55. Add the shot you’re about to hit and going for it costs about 3.55 strokes — roughly a quarter stroke better than laying up, even with a one-in-ten dunk in the water.
Push the water probability to 30% and the edge disappears. That’s the point: expected strokes lets you price a decision before you make it, using your own dispersion instead of your feelings about the last time you tried it. We work through more of these in risk vs reward: when to go for it.
Which One Should You Actually Look At?
Both, at different moments.
During a round, think in expected strokes, even loosely. You don’t need the table memorized. You need the habit of asking “which of my realistic outcomes leaves the cheapest position?” instead of “what’s the best thing that could happen here?” Short-side rough at 15 yards is a worse place to be than the middle of the green from 40 feet, and expected strokes is what makes that comparison concrete.
After a round, think in strokes gained. Expected strokes will not tell you whether your approach play is costing you shots, because it never evaluates anything.
