Approach play separates good rounds from bad ones more than any other part of the game, yet most golfers judge it with a single blunt number: greens in regulation. A strokes gained approach calculator gives you something far more useful. It tells you exactly how many strokes each iron shot won or lost against a benchmark, so a green you barely held and a green you stuffed to three feet stop counting the same.

What a Strokes Gained Approach Calculator Measures
Strokes gained approach covers every shot outside 30 yards that isn’t a tee shot on a par 4 or par 5. In practice that means your irons, hybrids, and long approaches from the fairway, rough, or sand. The calculator compares where your ball started to where it finished and reports the difference against an expected-strokes benchmark built from Mark Broadie’s research and PGA Tour ShotLink data.
Every position on the course has a benchmark: the average number of strokes a reference player needs to hole out from there. From 150 yards in the fairway, that number is about 2.82. From 12 feet on the green, it’s about 1.58. Your shot bridges those two positions, and the calculator does the arithmetic.
The formula is straightforward:
Strokes Gained = Starting Benchmark − 1 − Ending Benchmark
That 150-yard approach to 12 feet works out to 2.82 − 1 − 1.58 = +0.24. You beat the benchmark by roughly a quarter of a stroke on that one swing.
How to Use the Calculator, Step by Step
Feeding a shot into the strokes gained calculator takes four inputs:
- Starting lie: fairway, rough, or sand
- Starting distance: how far you were from the pin
- Ending lie: where the ball came to rest, usually the green or a miss
- Ending distance: how far the ball finished from the hole
The calculator looks up the benchmark for each position, subtracts the stroke you played, and returns your strokes gained for that shot. Positive means you outperformed the reference player; negative means you gave a fraction of a stroke back.
You don’t need a launch monitor or a GPS sensor for any of this. You need the yardage you had and a reasonable read on where the ball ended up, which is exactly the data golfity records when you track a round shot by shot.
Worked Examples From Common Yardages
Numbers make the concept click faster than any explanation, so here are three approach shots you probably hit every round.
A clean wedge from 100 yards:
- Starting: 100 yards, fairway (benchmark: 2.68)
- Ending: 8 feet, green (benchmark: 1.50)
- Strokes gained: +0.18
Hitting it to eight feet feels great, and it is above average, but only by about a fifth of a stroke. The reference player also does well from 100 yards in the fairway, so the bar is high. This is why “I stuffed a wedge” rarely moves your round as much as it feels like it should.
A missed green from 175 yards:
- Starting: 175 yards, fairway (benchmark: 3.02)
- Ending: 30 feet, greenside rough (benchmark: 2.60)
- Strokes gained: −0.58
Here’s the shot that actually decides rounds. You didn’t hit anything terrible, but leaving yourself a tricky chip from 175 costs more than half a stroke. String four of these together and you’ve lost two strokes without a single penalty or three-putt.
A recovery from the rough at 190 yards:
- Starting: 190 yards, rough (benchmark: 3.35)
- Ending: 25 feet, green (benchmark: 2.02)
- Strokes gained: +0.33
Reaching the green from 190 in the rough is genuinely hard, so finishing at 25 feet gains you a third of a stroke even though a 25-footer sounds unremarkable. The starting lie sets the bar low, and you cleared it.
Notice the pattern across all three: the ending distance you’d brag about at the bar isn’t what drives the number. The gap between your starting benchmark and where you finished is.
Reading the Results Without Fooling Yourself
A single shot’s strokes gained is noisy. One +0.4 approach doesn’t mean your iron play is good, and one −0.6 doesn’t mean it’s broken. The value shows up when you add shots together across a round and across rounds.
Per-round strokes gained approach falls on a rough scale:
- ±0.1 to ±0.3: close to your benchmark, no clear signal
- ±0.4 to ±0.7: a noticeable strength or weakness
- ±0.8 or more: a defining factor in your scoring
A +0.3 approach average sounds small until you stretch it across a season. Over 40 rounds that’s 12 strokes, roughly the distance between a 12 and a 10 handicap. This is the whole argument for why approach play matters more than GIR: the stat rewards the quality of your miss, not just the binary of green or no green.
