Strokes Gained Approach: Why It Matters More Than GIR
Two golfers can both hit 10 greens in regulation and lose three shots to each other on approach. GIR cannot see that gap. Strokes gained approach can.

Greens in regulation has been the standard approach stat for decades. It is easy to count and easy to understand: you either reached the green in regulation or you didn’t. But that simplicity hides almost everything that matters about your iron play. Strokes gained approach measures the same shots far more honestly, and once you see the gap between the two numbers, GIR starts to look like a blunt instrument.
The problem isn’t that greens in regulation is wrong. It’s that it answers a yes-or-no question when the real question has a hundred possible answers. A shot to four feet and a shot to the back fringe both count as one green hit. A wedge from 95 yards in the fairway and a long iron from 205 in the rough are scored on the same pass-or-fail scale. Those distinctions are exactly where strokes are won and lost.
What greens in regulation actually measures
GIR records whether your ball is on the putting surface in the expected number of strokes: one shot on a par 3, two on a par 4, three on a par 5. That’s the entire definition. It treats every green hit as identical and every green missed as identical.
Consider two approach shots on a par 4:
- Player A hits the green to 35 feet. GIR: hit.
- Player B hits a wedge to 6 feet. GIR: hit.
Both players get credit for one green in regulation. But Player B will two-putt far less often and make birdie far more often. From 6 feet, a typical amateur holes the putt close to half the time. From 35 feet, three-putts become a real risk and one-putts are rare. The scoring difference between these two shots is enormous, and GIR sees none of it.
Now flip it. Player A misses the green by two feet into a clean lie; Player B airmails it 30 yards over into a bunker. Both are recorded as a missed green. One is a routine up-and-down; the other often costs a stroke or more. Again, GIR is blind.
How strokes gained approach sees the whole shot
Strokes gained approach grades each shot against a benchmark based on where you started and where you ended up. It uses Mark Broadie’s expected-strokes model: every position on the course has an average number of strokes a player needs to hole out from there. Your approach shot is worth the difference between the expected strokes before the shot and after it, minus one for the shot you took.
A 150-yard approach from the fairway might have an expected-strokes value of about 2.98 for a scratch golfer. If you hit it to 15 feet, where the expected strokes to hole out is roughly 1.83, your shot gained:
2.98 − 1.83 − 1 = +0.15 strokesHit that same shot to 4 feet instead, and the expected strokes to hole out drops near 1.5, so you gain about +0.48. Leave it 40 feet away and you might gain close to zero even though you hit the green. The metric rewards proximity continuously instead of stamping every shot pass or fail.
It also accounts for difficulty. A shot from 205 yards in the rough starts with a much higher expected-strokes value, so just finding the green there is a genuine gain. From 95 yards in the fairway, hitting the green to 30 feet is actually a small loss, because a good player is expected to get much closer. GIR rates both as a flat success.
Two golfers, same GIR, different reality
Here’s the case that exposes the gap. Two 12-handicaps each hit 8 greens in a round.
- Golfer 1 hits those 8 greens to an average of 22 feet and misses the other 10 in scrambleable spots near the green.
- Golfer 2 hits 8 greens to an average of 48 feet and short-sides the misses into bunkers and thick rough.
Identical GIR. But Golfer 1 is leaving easier putts and easier up-and-downs all day. Over 18 holes that proximity advantage is worth two to three strokes. Strokes gained approach captures the difference immediately; GIR insists they played the same.
This is why tour-level analysis moved past GIR years ago. Broadie’s research in Every Shot Counts showed that proximity to the hole, weighted by starting distance and lie, explains scoring far better than a binary greens count. Approach play is the single biggest separator between handicap levels, and you can’t manage what a yes-or-no stat won’t let you measure.
What GIR still gets right
GIR isn’t useless. It’s a fast, intuitive gut check, and it correlates loosely with scoring because hitting more greens generally means hitting better approaches. If your GIR jumps from 4 to 9 per round, your iron play clearly improved. As a directional signal at the extremes, it works.
The trouble is the middle. Most of your rounds will land in a normal range of 6 to 10 greens, and within that band GIR can’t tell you whether you’re trending up or down in quality. It can’t tell you that your misses got more punishing, or that your makeable-birdie looks dried up. Strokes gained approach reads those shifts while GIR stays flat.
Reading both numbers together
You don’t have to abandon greens in regulation. Read it alongside SG:APP and the two tell a fuller story:
- High GIR, positive SG:APP — your approach game is genuinely strong.
- High GIR, negative SG:APP — you’re hitting greens but leaving long putts; you’re not attacking close enough, often because you’re playing safe to fat parts of the green.
- Low GIR, positive SG:APP — your misses are smart and close, and your good approaches are very good; the green count undersells you.
- Low GIR, negative SG:APP — approach is your priority. This is where to spend practice time.
That third row is the one GIR can never show you on its own. Plenty of golfers grind on hitting more greens when their real problem is the quality and dispersion of every approach, hit or missed.
