Strokes gained approach (often written SG:APP) measures how much your approach shots help or hurt your score compared to a benchmark player from the same distance and lie. If that already sounds like a lot, the short version is this: it is a single number that tells you whether your iron play is gaining you strokes or losing them.

The Strokes Gained Approach Meaning, Defined

The phrase has two parts. Strokes gained is the framework Mark Broadie built that compares any shot to the expected number of strokes a benchmark golfer needs from a given position. “Approach” narrows that framework to one type of shot: the ones you hit toward the green from a distance.

Put together, strokes gained approach answers a focused question. From where your ball started, did this shot leave you better or worse off than the benchmark would have been? Add up every approach shot in a round and you get your SG:APP for that round.

A positive number means your approach play gained strokes on the benchmark. A negative number means it lost strokes. Zero means you played the benchmark dead even.

What Counts as an Approach Shot

Not every shot is an approach shot. SG:APP only includes shots where you are aiming at the green from outside a set distance, usually about 30 yards. That covers:

  • Iron shots into the green on par 4s and par 5s
  • Tee shots on par 3s
  • Layups that still target the green
  • Long shots from the rough or fairway aimed at the putting surface

Once you are inside roughly 30 yards, the shot becomes a short-game shot and falls under “around the green” instead. Tee shots on par 4s and par 5s count as off the tee, not approach. In a normal round you will hit somewhere between 14 and 18 approach shots.

A Simple Example

Numbers make this concrete. Say you have 150 yards to the pin from the fairway. A benchmark golfer is expected to need about 2.85 strokes to hole out from there.

You hit a 7-iron to 18 feet. From 18 feet on the green, the benchmark needs about 1.85 strokes to finish.

Your strokes gained on that one shot is 2.85 − 1.85 − 1 = 0.00. You used one stroke, the situation improved by exactly what the benchmark predicted, so you gained nothing and lost nothing. That is a perfectly average approach.

Now hit the same shot to 6 feet instead. From 6 feet the benchmark needs about 1.45 strokes. Your strokes gained is 2.85 − 1.45 − 1 = +0.40. A clearly above-average approach.

Chunk it 60 yards short and the math flips. From 90 yards out the benchmark needs about 2.80 strokes, so you get 2.85 − 2.80 − 1 = −0.95. One bad swing just cost you nearly a full stroke.

How to Read Your SG:APP Number

Per-round SG:APP is easiest to interpret against a PGA Tour baseline:

Most amateurs will see large negative numbers against a Tour baseline, and that is normal. A 15-handicap typically sits around -4 to -5 strokes per round on approach. That is not a flaw in the stat; it reflects how much room there is between amateur and Tour iron play. Why It Beats Greens in Regulation

Greens in Regulation (GIR) is the traditional way to judge approach play, but it only records a yes or no: did the ball reach the green in the expected number of shots. It treats a 4-foot result and a 60-foot result as identical, and it cannot tell the difference between a 200-yard approach and a 90-yard one.

Strokes gained approach fixes both problems. It rewards proximity, so getting closer scores better, and it adjusts for starting distance, so a green hit from 200 yards counts for more than the same green from 90. That is why SG:APP is a sharper measure of iron play than GIR, and why approach is the category where most amateurs lose the most strokes.
