Every golfer has limited practice time. Maybe you get to the range twice a week. Maybe you can squeeze in 30 minutes of putting before a weekend round. The question isn’t whether you should practice — it’s what you should practice.

Most golfers answer that question with gut feeling. They hit driver because it’s satisfying, chip a few balls because they remember a bad up-and-down from last weekend, and leave the range feeling productive.

But productive and effective are different things.

Your stats already contain the answer. Strokes gained data tells you exactly where you’re losing strokes compared to golfers at your target level — and that’s where your practice time will have the highest return.

The problem with guessing

Golfers are notoriously bad at diagnosing their own weaknesses. There’s a consistent pattern in the research: players overestimate how much putting hurts them and underestimate how much approach shots cost them.

Mark Broadie’s research at Columbia University showed this clearly. When surveyed, most amateurs believed putting was their biggest weakness. The data told a different story — for the majority of mid-handicap golfers, the long game (tee shots and approach shots) accounts for roughly two-thirds of strokes lost to scratch.

This misperception leads directly to misallocated practice. A 15-handicap golfer who spends 60% of practice time on the putting green because “I’m a terrible putter” may actually be an average putter who is a below-average iron player. Without data, they’d never know.

Reading your stats: where to start

Step 1: Look at your strokes gained by category

The four strokes gained categories break your game into measurable segments:

  • Off the tee — driver and tee shots on par 4s and 5s

  • Around the green — chips, pitches, and bunker shots within ~50 yards
  • Putting — everything on the green

Each category shows a number: positive means you’re better than your baseline, negative means you’re losing strokes there. The more negative the number, the bigger the opportunity.

Step 2: Rank your categories from worst to best

A typical 12-handicap golfer’s strokes gained profile might look like this:

This golfer’s instinct might say “I three-putt too much, I need to practice putting.” But the numbers say approach shots are costing nearly six times as many strokes as putting. Practicing 6-irons and 7-irons would move the needle far more than practicing 8-foot putts.

Step 3: Dig into the subcategories

The broad categories are a starting point, but the real value comes from going deeper. Within “approach,” there are meaningful distinctions:

  • Distance bands: Are you losing strokes from 150-200 yards, or from 100-150 yards?
  • Lie conditions: Are fairway approach shots fine, but rough approach shots terrible?
  • Proximity to hole: How close are your approach shots actually finishing?

If your approach strokes gained is -1.8 and most of it comes from the 150-175 yard range, that’s your practice focus. Not “irons” generally — that specific distance with those specific clubs.

Building a practice plan from your data

Once you know where strokes are being lost, convert that into a practice allocation. The principle is simple: spend practice time in proportion to strokes lost.

The proportional allocation method

Take your strokes gained numbers and calculate what percentage of total strokes lost each category represents.

Using the example above:

If you have one hour to practice, that’s roughly:

  • 28 minutes hitting approach-distance iron shots (6-iron through pitching wedge from 100-200 yards)
  • 18 minutes working on tee shots (driver, 3-wood)
  • 9 minutes on short game (chips, pitches, bunker shots)
  • 5 minutes putting

This looks completely different from what most golfers do at the range. And that’s exactly the point.

Adjustments for practical reality

Pure proportional allocation is a starting point, not a rigid rule. Some adjustments make sense:

Minimum thresholds: Even if putting is your strongest category, spending zero time on it will cause regression. Allocate at least 10-15% to each category to maintain existing skills.

Facility constraints: If your range doesn’t have a good short game area, you can’t allocate 15% to chipping. Shift that time to the next priority and find a separate session for short game work.

Skill transfer: Some practice transfers across categories. Working on contact quality with mid-irons improves both approach shots and tee shots on par 3s.

Diminishing returns: If you’ve been hammering one weakness for weeks and the numbers have improved, recalculate. Your new weakest category might have shifted.

Real examples by handicap level

Different handicap levels tend to show different patterns. Here’s what the data typically reveals, based on strokes gained benchmarks.

The 20+ handicap golfer

Common pattern: Large losses off the tee (-2.5 or worse) and on approach (-3.0 or worse). Putting losses are moderate (-1.0 to -1.5).

Practice focus: Contact quality is the single biggest lever. Practice hitting the center of the clubface with mid-irons (7-iron, 8-iron). Consistent contact at this level typically improves both tee shots and approach shots simultaneously. Spend 60% of time on full-swing fundamentals, 20% on short game, and 20% on putting.

Why it works: At this level, the gap between good and bad shots is enormous. Reducing the frequency of topped shots, fat shots, and shanks from 100+ yards produces immediate scoring improvement.

The 12-15 handicap golfer

Common pattern: Approach shots are typically the weakest area (-1.5 to -2.5). Tee shots are moderate. Short game and putting are closer to average.

Practice focus: Iron accuracy from 125-175 yards. This is the scoring zone where mid-handicap golfers leave the most strokes on the table. Practice with specific targets — don’t just hit balls at the 150 sign. Aim at a flag or a spot and track your dispersion pattern.

Why it works: Improving approach shot proximity from 45 feet average to 35 feet average significantly reduces three-putts and increases birdie opportunities. The cascading effect on scoring is larger than the raw numbers suggest.

The 5-10 handicap golfer

Common pattern: Weaknesses are more evenly distributed, but one category usually stands out. Often it’s around the green (-0.8 to -1.5) or approach shot consistency from 175+ yards.

Practice focus: This depends heavily on individual data — there’s no universal answer at this level. Check your golfity dashboard for the specific category and distance bands where you’re losing strokes. Single-digit golfers often benefit most from short game and putting refinement because the absolute stroke values are smaller but the scoring leverage is high.

Why it works: At this level, shaving 0.3 strokes gained in your weakest area might be the difference between a 7 handicap and a 5 handicap. Precision in practice allocation matters more than raw volume.

How to track whether it’s working

A data-driven practice plan is only useful if you measure the results. Here’s the feedback loop:

Track rounds consistently

You need at least 5-10 rounds of shot-tracked data to see meaningful trends in strokes gained. Don’t make practice changes based on one or two rounds.

Compare rolling averages

Look at your strokes gained by category as a rolling average over your last 10-20 rounds, not individual rounds. Individual rounds have too much variance — a single out-of-bounds shot can make your “off the tee” number look terrible even if you struck the ball well all day.

Recalibrate every 6-8 weeks

After 6-8 weeks of focused practice, recalculate your practice allocation. Your weakest area may have improved enough that a different category is now the priority. This is normal and expected — it means the plan is working.

Watch for regression in other areas

If you’ve been spending 50% of practice time on approach shots and your putting strokes gained starts declining, increase your putting allocation. Skill maintenance requires ongoing attention even when it’s not your top priority.

Common mistakes to avoid

Chasing feelings instead of numbers

After a round with four three-putts, the emotional response is “I need to practice putting.” But if your strokes gained putting is still positive and those three-putts happened because your approach shots left you 50-foot first putts, the real issue is approach play. Trust the aggregate data over single-round emotions.

Practicing what you’re good at

Hitting driver at the range feels great when you’re already a good driver. But if your strokes gained off the tee is +0.5 and your approach is -2.0, every minute spent on driver is a minute not spent where it counts. Practice what needs work, not what’s already working.

Ignoring the short game entirely

Some golfers interpret “the long game matters most” as “the short game doesn’t matter.” That’s not what the data says. For many golfers, around the green and putting combined account for 30-40% of total strokes lost. Neglecting these areas guarantees a scoring ceiling.

Not practicing with purpose

Hitting 50 balls at the range without a target, a plan, or attention to results isn’t practice — it’s exercise. Every practice session should have a specific focus tied to your data. “Today I’m working on 150-yard approach shots to a specific target” is practice. “Today I’m hitting balls” is not.

Putting it all together

Here’s a practical workflow for turning your stats into a practice plan:

  1. Pull up your strokes gained by category in golfity or your tracking app
  2. Identify your two weakest categories — these get 70% of your practice time
  3. Drill into distance bands and lies to find the specific shots costing you strokes
  4. Build a weekly schedule that allocates time proportionally to strokes lost
  5. Practice with targets and intention — not just volume
  6. Re-evaluate every 6-8 weeks as your profile changes
  7. Track rounds consistently so the feedback loop stays accurate
